Hi everyone! Long time Dr. Dog fan here, and I was wondering what everyone's thoughts are on Psychedelic Swamp.
I've been obsessed with the band since around 2007, and first heard the album in 2009. I almost immediately dismissed it as 'weird for the sake of weird' with very few redeeming tracks. However, lately I've revisited it and listening to it start to finish a few times over really made me reconsider the album as a whole.
There are the obvious tracks that can be considered 'good' in that they are melodic, easy to listen to, and just have that overall Dr. Dog-ish feel about them. 'Engineer Says', 'Fire On My Back', 'Swampadelic Pop', the cover of 'Heroes and Villains' by the Beach Boys, and obviously 'Swamp Livin' have always been considered stand-out tracks to me. Addenbrooke's cognitive examination. But the rest of the album definitely rides the line between weird-music and just straight up weird-noises.
However, upon re-examination I think that many of these tracks wouldn't feel nearly as good in a vacuum as they do when taken as a part of the whole album.
For example, the first 10 tracks of the album set up this just utterly bizarre sound, from the opening trumpet featured on 'Phrases Dreams of Another World' all the way through to the repetitiveness of 'Swamp Commercial' and the uncomfortable minute of random noises that is 'Car Crash'. But then when we hit the stride that is tracks 8 and 9, ('Engineer Says' and 'Swamp Decent') it becomes obvious that there really is a huge amount of musical talent behind these guys, and that if we can hold out long enough and listen to the whole album we will be in for a wild ride.
Another example is the strangeness that is the 'top 10' section of the album, experienced in tracks 20 through 23. First off, the first track of this batch specifically cites that we will be hearing the top 10 tracks of the complete century, as selected by Swamp radio. But then we only get 5 (or 4??) songs. And most of the 'top 5 hits of the complete century' are not very good at all!! But then once we put up with the cognitive dissonance that most of this collection of noises presents, we finally reach that number 1 track, 'Swamp Livin', which was later re-released as a track on the band's second album, Toothbrush. There is no sensation quite as sweet and hearing a real song after 5-7 minutes of abrasive noises.

Finally, I wanted to bring up the track that closes the album, 'Dumb Echo, Phrases Himself'. This song can best be described as Scott and Toby reading a non-sense script over what may or may not be a single bar of music played on a synthesizer in the background. This chunk of dialogue (if you can call it that) was then chopped into bits, with many bits being played on repeat three or four times, creating this feeling of absolute confusion that must parallel what the fictional characters trapped forever in the Swamp itself must be feeling. Then we hear what I believe is Toby (but it's hard to tell with all of the distortion added) exclaim the following: 'I once made a list of lists I had to make.' And the album ends.
It's confusing. It's abrasive. It hurts my ears, and it makes me angry. But then, just often enough, over the course of this messy and insane album, there is a really damn nice song to listen to. And I think, after reflecting on it for years now, that I really love this rough 'first try' that Dr. Dog recorded. It is not easy-listening, and it certainly isn't the particular brand of folksy pop rock that Dr. Dog has mastered in modern times. I'm sure as hell glad that Toothbrush is the first official release over Psychedelic Swamp, but as I previously mentioned, anyone who dismissed this collection of songs should really give it another go. I know that diving into it again gave me a new perspective!
I'd love to hear of anyone else's thoughts and experiences with the Psychedelic Swamp. Calculus 9th edition by salas hille etgen pdf converter. Love it or hate it, it's there. And I think it's worth talking about. Thanks for reading this rambling mess to anyone who made it this far!
